This position is located in Statistical Services Branch of the Statistics Division, Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Statistical Dissemination Section.

Responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Statistical Dissemination Section, the Statistician will be responsible for the following duties:

• Plans and carries out the compilation, processing and dissemination of socio-economic statistics and indicators in the Statistical Yearbook (SYB) by: selecting and implementing methods for data collection and compilation in databases; ensuring the quality of the collected data for accuracy, comparability and timeliness; deciding on changes to be introduced in the SYB, both in terms of substance and data presentation, including innovations and additions of new data series; compiling and ensuring the quality of the technical notes on concepts and methods.

• Contributes to the development, maintenance and enhancement of UNdata by performing ongoing reviews of its content in terms of data, metadata, functionality and agency and country coverage and suggest and implement improvements;

• Participates in the development or revision of standards on statistical concepts, definitions and classifications in these products by participating in methodological research.

• Prepares draft technical documents on these products for international, intergovernmental and expert group meetings and assist in drafting relevant reports.

• Organizes and participates in seminars, working groups and expert meetings on data compilation and dissemination as a technical resource person.

• Guides, trains and supervises general service staff.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, sociology or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience:
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data or related area is required. Editorial experience in statistical dissemination and experience with complex statistical databases is required.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Method:
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
